The ASCEND (Advancing STEM-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) NeuroExplorers program is a semester-long VIRTUAL neuroscience learning opportunity for kids grades 6-8 made possible by the Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute and Stiles-Nicholson Foundation.
Led by professional neuroscientists, students will learn about neuroscience by using cutting-edge educational tools, including hands-on virtual/augmented reality applications. Students will engage via lessons which include neuron anatomy to neuron communication, brain anatomy, how scientists study the brain, and brain disorders. Students will receive a monthly Brain Box filled with hands-on activities geared towards the topics covered by neuroscientists for that month. Students will join a virtual science classroom two Wednesdays every month to complete their hands-on activities and have the opportunity to ask questions live. During weeks between the virtual classroom experiences, students will be sent engaging podcasts, Brain Bites, and videos "How Does My Brain Work", to continue their neuro-exploration. Each lesson in which the students participate is a chance to win brain swag and a brainy grand prize! Students who complete the full program will graduate as Jr. Neuroscientists.
Who can join: Middle school students ONLY
Program cost: $100* per registrant for the entire semester.
Important note: NeuroExplorers is continuous throughout the semester to create continuity and a community of learners and doers. Students are required to attend all sessions to graduate in May.
